Collaborating to Decolonise Sentencing Narratives: Aboriginal Community Justice Reports

Collaborating to Decolonise Sentencing Narratives: Aboriginal Community Justice Reports

Join us for the next Carnegie Network session, where we will explore the collaboration between the University of Technology Sydney and the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service that established Aboriginal Community Justice Reports in sentencing. These reports, written by and for First Nations people, challenge systemic biases in the criminal justice system by amplifying Indigenous voices and highlighting the ongoing impacts of colonisation, racism, and classism. While decolonising the legal system remains an impossible task, these reports offer a powerful tool for rewriting sentencing narratives and promoting reintegration and cultural responses. This impactful initiative, which received the 2024 Excellence in Indigenous Engagement Award, demonstrates how research and community partnerships can drive meaningful change.
