06 Sep New students ‘Discover CDU’
“Discover CDU” is a key event to showcase Charles Darwin University (CDU) to the broader community and prospective students.
CDU is a dual sector university with more than 23,000 students spread across 11 campuses and centres in the Northern Territory, Sydney and Melbourne. The university is also home to a number of research institutes and partnerships, most notably Menzies School of Health, Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods and the Northern Institute.
A newly rebranded Discover CDU attracted more than 4,000 people to the university’s main campus located in Darwin.
CDU Manager Student Recruitment and Events Katrina Jenkins said there was a stronger focus on student recruitment than previous years.
“There was a concerted effort in attracting and engaging potential students,” Ms Jenkins said. “We aimed to display what CDU has to offer future students whether they be school leavers or those seeking a career change.”
A wide variety of talks, tours and interactive demonstrations were offered on the day. The newly-built fire training facility, barramundi feeding at our aquaculture centre, 3D printing, print-making and operating a one-tonne digger were crowd favourites.
“One activity that proved very successful in engaging the community was the VET butchery team’s attempt to fashion the NT’s longest sausage,” Ms Jenkins said.
“This fun activity saw about 100 people actively involved in making an 80-metre sausage, received positive media coverage and public feedback.”
Discover CDU was advertised with a mix of traditional and social media. Social media channels (such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) were used to drive targeted traffic to encourage registrations to the talks, workshops and tours. The ‘Win a laptop’ competition and student coverage on Instagram also proved very successful.
