With the promised Universities Accord on the horizon, the Australian Higher Education sector has the opportunity to build a new future based on the foundations of shared purpose and understanding with government, industry and the Australian public. In his election speech Labor leader Anthony Albanese promised to “seek our common purpose and promote unity” but a decade of fractured relationships between community, universities and the government will require more than propping up an old and tired funding model.  What is the reimagined central role of engagement with business, government and communities in the lead up to, and implementation of the Universities Accord; and how do we seize this opportunity to ensure that engagement for public purpose becomes the new sustainable turning point for our cherished sector?

Day One of the Conference focuses on the theory, strategy, and evidence for university engagement. The agenda includes a keynote presentation and panel sessions led by sector leaders with a focus on the Labor Government’s proposed Universities Accord – what should this look like, where does engagement fit in, and how can we make sure that engagement for public purpose is on the agenda for key decision makers? Then hear from experts on evaluation frameworks for measuring and demonstrating social impact.

Day Two of the Conference creates inclusive space to promote practise and build capacity for engagement. Join us to learn more about the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification in Australia and how Australian Universities are participating. Hear from case studies of community engaged research, teaching and learning, and practice; and participate in a skills development sessions on how to practice respectful action and inclusive allyship through the art of conversation
